Monte-Carlo Polo School Opening

This weekend Riviera Polo Club met Monte-carlo Polo Club for a friendly inaugural match to celebrate Monte Carlo’s becoming a member of FIP (Fédération Internationale du Polo). At Riviera Polo Club we met admission criteria last month and so this was a good excuse to celebrate.

Friday morning Alexia and Jamie trucked the ponies down to Monte Carlo where club-president Francesco Mitran was setting up the marquees and the food. On Saturday, with lots of help from Jean Bernard and ambassador Ksenia Marchenkova, he was charming the guests and making everybody very welcome, while my old buddy Chris Carr provided a warm and funny commentary to the antics on the field.

The inaugural match was a close game, but eventually played out 6-4 in favour of Riviera Polo Club; the last action resulting in a ‘golaso’ from Alexia Pike who hit the ball clean out of the ground and into the parking lot in a perfect ‘can we have our ball back’ scenario.

Stars and Bars on the quay in Monte Carlo gave us a perfect venue to chug beer, munch tapas, and plan tactics for the next day.

On Sunday we mixed the teams and shared chukkas so that everybody got to play; we saw action from Jamie Pike, Antoine Serval, Patrick Coote, Oscar Carona, and Chantal dAcquarone. Monte Carlo fielded Francesco Mitran, my old chum Alejandro Pastorini, and their new polo-manager Benjamin Polledo.

The score at the end of play was a marvellously balanced 5-5 draw and so everybody went home happy, obviously via Stars and Bars, where we chugged beer, munched tapas and chewed the cud.

We met lots of new people and made hordes of new friends, and I am sure that this weekend was the start of a long and enjoyable relationship between our two clubs. Muchas gracias a todos !
